At MUVEMENT, we surprise a lot of people when we tell them that FITNESS IS OVERATED!! Yes, you read that correctly, and we completely stand behind our words, but let me further explain.
First off, we will tell you that fitness is incredibly important for your health for many reasons such as cardiovascular health, strength, bone, health, and probably most important of all mental/emotional health. Fitness is however NOT a magic bullet. In fact, I would rate it at the 3rd most important factor in regards to your overall health.
At MUVEMENT we focus on all three pillars of health; Fitness, Nutrition, and Function, and we believe that the order of priority for each of these is as follows.
1. FUNCTION: It doesn’t matter how fit you are, if you do not get to the root cause of your health issues such as digestive problems, immune dysfunction, hormone imbalances, and oxidative stress, you will never achieve true health, will struggle to lose any significant amount of weight, and will never truly feel better, no matter how great your fitness program is.
2. NUTRITION: There are 3 major mistakes people make when they address diet. They fail to understand Bio-Chemical Individuality, meaning they do don’t understand that there is no one size fits all diet, and that their body may respond differently to certain foods than their friends or family.
Secondly, they do not take into consideration the potential FUNCTIONAL issues mentioned above when putting together their diet plan. Customized nutrition is key when taking into consideration possible dysfunction in the body.
Thirdly, people underestimate the importance of accountability when it comes to diet. It’s easy to come to a class or training session 3 to 4 times per week and be committed, but it’s much harder to adhere to a diet plan when you are left to your own devices the remaining 164 hours each week.
3. FITNESS: Again, fitness is extremely important to your overall health, it’s just that it’s not going to be that magic bullet and fix all your health issues. Fitness is also not going to going to help you melt away amazing amounts of fat unless you address underlying FUNCTIONAL issues and get dialed into and are CONSISTANT with a diet that is right for your body!
At MUVEMENT, we’re not very good at going with the crowd. While everyone else is talking about how their fitness program is the key to you losing your 10, 20, or 50 pounds…we know better.
We believed the same thing for a long time until we started seeing many people fail to lose weight or feel better in spite of great fitness programming on our end and great effort and compliance on their end.
This was unacceptable to me so I began to seek and understand physiology at a deeper level that I had not learned in my college courses. In doing so I came across Functional Diagnostic Nutrition (FDN) and learned how dysfunction in the body’s Immune system, hormonal pathways, digestive system, and detoxification systems, not only prevent people from losing weight and feeling better, but are also the catalyst to disease.
I went back to school and studied to become a Functional Diagnostic Nutrition practitioner (FDN-P) and learned the process of identifying these dysfunctions through state of the art lab testing and a diagnostic (investigative) process. Once we figure out where the dysfunction is, we help the client restore function through targeted supplementation and customized diet.
By incorporating the functional component to our programs, we have been able to help many people who had previously felt helpless, restore their health an achieve their weight loss goals that they never thought possible!
